Former insurance agent and investment adviser sentenced for Ponzi scheme targeting elderly

Former Dayton-area insurance agent and investment adviser John Gregory Schmidt was sentenced recently in Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas to serve five years in prison. A joint investigation conducted by the Ohio Department of Insurance and the Ohio Department of Commerce revealed Schmidt had been operating a “Ponzi” scheme for more than a decade and defrauded elderly consumers.

Ohio State Bar Foundation inducts 30 new Fellows

The Ohio State Bar Foundation (OSBF) inducted 30 attorneys into its honorary Fellows Program at the Thomas J. Moyer Ohio Judicial Center last month. Supreme Court of Ohio Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor and OSBF President Rob Ware presided over the ceremony and reception.

Three from Toledo charged for identity-theft conspiracy

A 16-count indictment was unsealed charging three people for their roles in a conspiracy to steal people’s identities and personal information to obtain stolen or unauthorized credit cards to buy electronics, clothing, appliances and other items.

Toledo Law competes at China IP Moot Court Competition

Toledo Law students competed at the Beijing Foreign Studies University-Wanhuida Cup Intellectual Property Moot Court Competition held in Beijing on earlier this summer. This year, the competition hosted twelve teams from China, and Toledo Law was the only team from the United States.

An Alaska man is headed to prison for defrauding 15 victims out of money, property and services valued at more than $750,000, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost and Morgan County Prosecutor Mark Howdyshell announced recently.

‘Celebrating Comeback of the Burning River’ documentary wins Emmy award

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Lower Great Lakes Chapter announced recently the awarding of an Emmy for an Ohio EPA documentary chronicling the recovery of the Cuyahoga River. The 13-minute video, “Celebrating the Comeback of the Burning River,” revisits the June 22, 1969, river fire that gained national attention. The creation of federal and state clean air and water regulations (and agencies) soon followed, marking the beginning of remarkable environmental restorations throughout the country, including those improvements now evident in the Cuyahoga River.
