Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost recently announced that Jeffrey Scott, president of the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police, will become executive director of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA).

“Once a Buckeye, always a Buckeye” was the thinking of the Ohio Department of Higher Education (formerly the Ohio Board of Regents) and the Ohio General Assembly when they created the Forever Buckeyes program in 2011.

Toledo honored with NABC team academic excellence award

The Toledo men's basketball team has received the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Team Academic Excellence Award, the association announced last Thursday. The award is in its seventh year of existence, and the Rockets have received the award in four of the last six years. Toledo was one of just two Mid-American Conference schools to be honored this year and is one of 14 schools to achieve this accomplishment at least four times in the last six years.

Walmart Inc. and Brazil-Based subsidiary agree to pay $137 million to resolve foreign corrupt practices act case

Walmart Inc. (Walmart), a U.S.-based multinational retailer and its wholly owned Brazilian subsidiary, WMT Brasilia S.a.r.l. (WMT Brasilia), have agreed to pay a combined criminal penalty of $137 million to resolve the government’s investigation into violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). WMT Brasilia pleaded guilty recently in connection with the resolution.

New projects expected to create more than $139 million in investments

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Lt. Governor Jon Husted recently announced the approval of assistance for 10 projects set to create 1,559 new jobs and retain 1,788 jobs statewide. During its monthly meeting, the Ohio Tax Credit Authority (TCA) reviewed economic development proposals brought to the board by JobsOhio and its regional partners. Collectively, the projects are expected to result in more than $105 million in new payroll and spur more than $139 million in investments across Ohio.

Six Rockets named MAC distinguished scholar athletes

Six University of Toledo student-athletes were named Distinguished Scholar Athletes from the spring season by the Mid-American Conference. The awards were received following strong contributions in the field of competition and exemplary work in the classroom.

Adult Protective Services Database now used statewide

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) announced recently that a data collection and reporting system for capturing reports of elder abuse and neglect is now being used statewide. All 88 counties use the Ohio Database for Adult Protective Services (ODAPS) to record referrals, investigations and case management activities for every adult abuse, neglect and exploitation case reported in the state, greatly improving both data accuracy and availability.

Modification of wind farm permit not subject to stricter location standards

The Ohio Power Siting Board was authorized to allow a proposed 25-turbine wind farm in Huron County to change the model of turbines it will use without subjecting the facility to stricter turbine setback requirements imposed by state lawmakers after the windfarm’s original certification, the Ohio Supreme Court ruled recently.

Program designates Ohio Clean Marinas and provides education to the marina industry

Thirteen marinas achieved base, gold or platinum certification status as Ohio Clean Marinas within the past year. Since its inception in 2003, the Ohio Clean Marinas Program has worked with state, federal and local agencies, marina owners and marine trades industry associations to achieve a balance between environmental sustainability and economic stability for the marina industry in Ohio. There are currently 79 certified Ohio Clean Marinas, and a recently launched tiered certification program enables marinas to demonstrate further environmental stewardship by achieving a gold or platinum status. State Auditor identifies $2.7 million in savings for Ohio EPA

Auditor of State Keith Faber recently released a performance audit of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency’s (Ohio EPA) real estate footprint, which recommends potential savings of $2.7 million in the first year.

U.S. Attorney Justin Herdman named to new working group focused on prosecuting gun crimes to stop and reduce domestic violence

Attorney General William P. Barr recently announced the formation of a Domestic Violence Working Group aimed at keeping guns out of the hands of convicted domestic abusers, using the tools of federal prosecution to stop and prevent domestic violence. The group will operate under the auspices of the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee (AGAC) and be comprised of nine U.S. Attorneys across the country, chaired by U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas Erin Nealy Cox.
