Three from Toledo charged for identity-theft conspiracy

A 16-count indictment was unsealed charging three people for their roles in a conspiracy to steal people’s identities and personal information to obtain stolen or unauthorized credit cards to buy electronics, clothing, appliances and other items.

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Lower Great Lakes Chapter announced recently the awarding of an Emmy for an Ohio EPA documentary chronicling the recovery of the Cuyahoga River. The 13-minute video, “Celebrating the Comeback of the Burning River,” revisits the June 22, 1969, river fire that gained national attention. The creation of federal and state clean air and water regulations (and agencies) soon followed, marking the beginning of remarkable environmental restorations throughout the country, including those improvements now evident in the Cuyahoga River.

Toledo honored with NABC team academic excellence award

The Toledo men's basketball team has received the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Team Academic Excellence Award, the association announced last Thursday. The award is in its seventh year of existence, and the Rockets have received the award in four of the last six years. Toledo was one of just two Mid-American Conference schools to be honored this year and is one of 14 schools to achieve this accomplishment at least four times in the last six years.

Walmart Inc. and Brazil-Based subsidiary agree to pay $137 million to resolve foreign corrupt practices act case

Walmart Inc. (Walmart), a U.S.-based multinational retailer and its wholly owned Brazilian subsidiary, WMT Brasilia S.a.r.l. (WMT Brasilia), have agreed to pay a combined criminal penalty of $137 million to resolve the government’s investigation into violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). WMT Brasilia pleaded guilty recently in connection with the resolution.
