Ohioans to see multitude of colors from spring wildflowers

Students in Tax Controversy Clinic attend United States Tax Court

Toledo Law students involved in the law school’s Tax Controversy Clinic traveled to Cleveland during spring break to attend a trial session of the United States Tax Court. Nicholas Benya, James Grandowicz, Lauren Jackson, Chelsea Kemper, and Thomas Kirkham attended the calendar call and volunteered to provide assistance to unrepresented taxpayers.

Toledo posts runner-up finish at MAC Championships

Junior Saranlak Tumfong posted a runner-up finish on Sunday, April 21, at the Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championships to help the University of Toledo to its fifth second-place showing in the last seven seasons in the tournament.

Governor DeWine forms RecoveryOhio Minority Health Working Group

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, following a new report by the Ohio Department of Health, recently announced the formation of the RecoveryOhio Minority Health Working Group to make recommendations on reducing overdose deaths among minority populations. The Ohio Drug Overdose Data: Demographic Summary shows that in 2017, black non-Hispanic males had the highest overdose death rate in Ohio.

Court-cost-only judgment cannot be appealed

When a trial court decides not to impose a sentence for a minor misdemeanor, it must clearly state in the judgment of conviction that no sentence is imposed before the convicted person can file an appeal, the Ohio Supreme Court ruled recently.

Student loan debt growth fastest among boomers

(BPT) Student loan debt in the U.S. has been skyrocketing for years, recently topping $1.5 trillion, and now surpassing automobile loans and credit cards to become the largest source of personal debt, aside from mortgages. Millennials bear the brunt of that burden, with 75 percent of the generation carrying some form of college debt. But the problem isn't contained to the younger generation. According to a new white paper from The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America(R) (Guardian), baby boomers are increasingly feeling the strain of student loan debt - and it's having a major impact on their overall well-being.

Former Ohio attorney general Dann goes after BMV for bogus $1.50 fees

A Cleveland law firm headed by former Ohio Attorney General Marc Dann filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of Ohioans who paid for a false laminating fee of $1.50 since late last year when deputy registrars' ceased distributing state license and ID cards.

Rockets complete spring season with final scrimmage

The Rockets completed their 2019 spring practice season with a 45-minute controlled scrimmage at the Glass Bowl last Friday night. It was the 15th and final practice of the spring. Head Coach Jason Candle said the spring practice sessions have left him feeling good about this team.

Summary for proposed presidential election amendment certified

The Ohio Attorney General’s Office recently certified a summary of a petition for a proposed amendment to the Ohio Constitution. The proposed amendment would change the way Ohio’s Electoral College members vote in presidential elections. An alternative summary for the same proposed amendment was rejected.
